A Hidden Sargent Painting Revives the Story of a Rebel Heiress Who Shaped Art History

An elusive John Singer Sargent portrait of Winnaretta Singer at the Musée d’Orsay, revives the story of the radical heiress-turned-arts patron.
Self-portrait c.1885 by Winnaretta Singer.

The painting shows a softly rendered figure seated indoors, holding an open dark-colored book. The person has short, curly hair adorned with small leafy shapes and gazes outward with a calm, slightly distant expression.

She wears a green garment patterned with delicate floral motifs over a red collar. Behind her hangs a light curtain washed with warm pink and peach tones, through which daylight filters. To the side, a window reveals a bright, impressionistic garden scene in greens and yellows.
