We're now safely in our hotel room for today in a town called Carnarvon. It seems to be a town of rich history starting with its origins as a Rhenish mission, rising to significance during the Boer wars and now a remote (yes, I used the R word) place barely kept alive by farms. It looks as though deprivation levels here are very high, so the hotel keeps guests behind locked doors and locked steel gates. It's a little uncomfortable, I'll admit, as it's outside our experience
