I recently tried to reach my uncle in the hospital after he was admitted on a weekend and got the runaround from both the hospital operators and the nurses on my uncle's floor. They both refused to put me on the phone with him, insisting instead that I needed to go through "care management", which is closed on the weekends. (1/5)
After this went down I registered a detailed complaint with the hospital's patient relations department. Patient relations acknowledged that it shouldn't have happened. As a result of my complaint, hospital staff are being retrained to ensure it doesn't happen again. (2/5)
By the time I registered the complaint, the problem was already resolved for me personally. It was no longer the weekend, I was able to get in touch with care management, and they put me in touch with my uncle and told me how to call his bedside phone directly moving forward. So, why did I spend time and effort making a fuss about a problem that was already solved? (3/5)
Because if I hadn't, then while the problem was solved for me, it wouldn't have been solved for others who are put in the same situation in the future. I was in a position where I could put in some time and effort now to make things better for everyone later.
Taking advantage of these opportunities when they arrive has been, quite literally, a guiding principle of my adult life, and I want to encourage other people to take it on. (4/5)
