Merriam-Webster just released the first new print edition of its Collegiate Dictionary in 22 years — and it weighs five pounds! So of course, I had questions. :)

In today's podcast, I talk with Peter Sokolowski about why print still matters.

@grammargirl Interesting subject! I bought print Albanian-English English-Albanian dictionaries and the Albanians around me could not believe it as they figure they can get everything from Google Translate.

Even if it weren't for translation mistakes and the absence of some context, the net isn't always up and accessible.

@grammargirl Thanks for the heads up! Ordered the new edition immediately and am looking forward to it. Opening a dictionary (or encyclopedia!) to a random page and just browsing takes me down so many wonderful rabbit holes.

To me at least, they do matter and are important.

@grammargirl Print, sure. Now I'm wondering what that monster of a book would be like in braille... An NIV Bible is about 60 volumes, I think. The fourth Harry Potter book is, if memory serves, ten. I can't imagine what a five-pound book would turn into.

@grammargirl @alexhall The standard King James Bible with 66 books is about 22 Braille volumes. My Catholic Bible, which contains 73 books, is considerably more; I can't remember the exact number. When I was a kid, I had a Braille copy of the American Vest Pocket Dictionary, which was 7 volumes, including a voluume with reference info. Most Braille dictionaries consist of more than 7 volumes. An old edition of the World Book Encyclopedia was over 100 volumes, around 144 if I'm remembering correctly. I think I'll take an app instead.
